They said, what?

I was in a room of student teachers the other day after work. They were talking about a student who cries everyday. She said she didn’t know what was wrong with him. “He must have a touch of Aspergers,” she said. And everyone in the room burst out laughing. I sat there feeling angry and ashamed that I didn’t say anything. I wanted to tell them that they had hurt my feelings, but I couldn’t speak up.  Now, I just imagine what I could have said to shock them into shutting up. Am I a joke?

  1. I was at comicon in Denver and one panelist was talking about Harry Potter villains and mentioned that Voldemort never cried as a child and said “you know, that is a symptom of autism.” Thank you panelist for telling everyone in the room that the biggest villain in the series was that way because of autism. If you ask my mother, she will tell you I cried non-stop…but who am I to argue with your pop psychology.

  2. Some people are ignorant, unthoughtful, and careless with words. You are not a joke. Possibly you were wise in not speaking through your emotions, I don’t know. Maybe sending a letter to their board, or regulating body would be good to help them.
Anyway, I would like to apologize for all the unthoughtful, inconsiderate persons who make comments and laugh about people who suffer. There are more of us who would support you than comment negatively. God’s Blessings.

  3. That must have been devastating! But they did say it in front of you, so maybe they don’t associate you with Aspergers (or either they’re really mean!) Think I might consider bringing some educational materials to their supervisor and suggesting that these student teachers should be educated on how best to deal with undiagnosed Aspergers children, relate what had happened, and that since you were diagnosed, you’d be happy to discuss the subject with them. Hopefully they will feel ashamed of what they must have caused you to feel! There are some cold, heartless people out there; I just try to not let them turn me heartless and cold in response. Don’t let them win! Peace πŸ™‚
